A modelling threesome as the Fortuna together with the West RC211V and the test version of the Teléfonica RC211V was to enter the IPMS Open modelling contest in Stockholm on the 27-28th of March 2004. I started christmas 2003 and sat every night in the last week, on the last night until 3 AM... But I made it!

Nice RCV kit but a build that has been pretty troublesome. I based the build on Tamiya's Repsol kit and didn't look too much on my reference pics when it came to the cowlings. Later I found out that the bikes have some differences depending on the rider. The Fortuna is set for the short japaneese rider Kato while the Repsol is set for the taller Valentino Rossi. To fix this the seat must have some extra plastic and the tank needs to be shortened. As my build had progressed so far I decided to skip the tank and set off to fix the seat section.  I don't find the result 100 percent satisfying but it looks a bit more authentic.

The choice between CF decal and the mesh technique where you spray XF-56 through a mesh over X-18 was hard to make. In the end I made the choice to use both.
Painting the two tone livery of the Fortunan was next to hassel me. I chose to use TS-30 for the silver and TS-36 "Flourescent red" on the red parts. I painted silver first, then I applied the black/white/silver separators and clear coated the parts to seal the decals in. I masked them off and painted the red. The lower cowl had some of the separator destroyed as it lifted with the masking tape but the result is fairly ok. I'm not too sore that the Flourescent red is the perfect match to go with the more orangeish Fortuna decals.

I first ordered decals from Museum Collection but as they were not pre cut to fit the air scopes on the side cowlings it would have taken a lot of work to do them justice. I chose to order a Studio 27 sheet as well. If I don't get a glorious idea of what to do with the extra set this has turned in to an expensive model. Almost as expensive as a Tamiya kit in Sweden ;-)
Of the two possible versions I made the version from the GP of Portugal. The choice fell on this one cause it would meen the least troublesome work applying the Fortuna decals.

Nice looking bike wich could have turned out better if I had some skill... I had not learned to thin the acrylics which led to visible paint brush strokes. A LOT of finger prints in semi dry paint (before I learned to use gloves while painting). I also painted the fairings and cowling parts with too heavy coats of TS-17.
